“17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.” NRSV
It seems James is making the point that God’s perfect gift was humankind. We came into being as “the word of truth….a kind of first fruits of God’s creatures.”
But what on earth does that mean?
It could be that James believed the birth of humankind was intended to be the proof of God. We are the perfect gift in that we are the only creatures who can perceive the reality of God. No other creature has the mental capacity to do that. James is suggesting that God made us to be the very consciousness (keeper of the truth) of all creation. That alone makes God worthy of our praise and thanksgiving.
Be a blessing to someone today!
