Stilling the Storms

Matthew 8:23-27

“And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”  NRSV

When you are in the middle of a storm of life, with waves crashing against you on all sides, darkness blinding your from the ports of safety, gripped by the real fear that your lifeboat could sink and you would be drowned by the storm, we must still our fears long enough to remember that Jesus is in the boat with us. That we are not facing the storms of life alone. Jesus is there, waiting for us to call out his name, to place our faith and trust in him, in his ability to still the storms of life.

Jesus may not suddenly appear in the bow of our boat like those early disciples witnessed, but Jesus will come. He may come in the form of a friend, or just the right words of encouragement, or the perfect unexpected gift, or in a thousand different ways, but Jesus will come. Jesus will calm the raging winds of life that howl against us.

We must trust Jesus enough to call upon his name, follow his lead, love others the way he loves us, and, be ready to go when he sends us to be the answer to another’s cry to Jesus for help.

” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. Matthew 4:24 ”

When we are sent by Jesus to be the answer to another’s prayer then, in return, Jesus will send someone or something to be the answer to our prayer for help with the promise that “still more will be given.” That’s the way of God. That is what Jesus came to teach us. It’s how love works. It’s why self-centeredness or selfishness is so offensive to God. It breaks the chain of love for God and love for neighbor God set in motion. It’s the love that makes the world (the kingdom of God) go round.

Be a blessing to someone today!
