“On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
The Season of Pentecost runs from the Day of Pentecost to the first Sunday of Advent. It’s a long season that is all about the work of building up the church.
We will miss the point of the Season of Pentecost if we forget that the Spirit of God is the “agency” of God sent to help build up the church. That’s the point of Pentecost Sunday and Acts 2.
Here, John reminds us that it is the “believer’s heart” through which the Spirit is unleashed in the world to do the bidding of God. It comes like “rivers of living water” flowing through us to bless us and bless the world as the faithful of God.
Open your heart! Let the rivers of living water flow through you to be a blessing to someone today!
