“Most of us were taught that God would love us if and when we change. In fact, God loves you so that you can change. What empowers change, what makes you desirous of change is the experience of love. It is that inherent experience of love that becomes the engine of change.”
― Richard Rohr
I was not raised in the church. Most of the time I regret that. But not being raised in the church gave me a unique perspective that has served me well. One blessing of God not being the center stage of my life growing up was that God was never used as “whip” to get me to shape up. I was never told that my relationship with God was dependent upon my good behavior. I have known way too many people who were not so fortunate. For them, they only image of God they knew as the divine punisher, ready to lash out at them when they broke the rules. Many abandoned this God altogether and who could blame them. Some are still living in fear of this tyrant God and everyone around them suffers for it along with them
Rohr is so right here. Love is the inspiration for change. Not because we are bad but we cause we are not yet whole. It is the divine invitation to live into our calling, our very reason for being.
